Marco Beteta

In contrast with the vibrant and cosmopolitan atmosphere of Cancun, Cozumel’s atmosphere is more relaxed, cozy and surrounded by certain mysticism. Eclectic architecture (Mayan style fusion, colonial influence and contemporary design). Also known as the diving capital (second largest coral reef) it is of course a mandatory destination for those who want to practice this activity, but also to go in a relaxed vacation as a couple, or with friends, and even families with young children. In addition to its beaches (fortunately, some of them are still virgin) it has one of the most important Mayan settlements.

Of particular interest: San Gervasio (archaeological site and the Ixchel sanctuary, fertility and love goddess, in whose honor every month of May the Sacred Mayan Voyage is celebrated, a show that must not be missed); Cedral Temple (considered the oldest Mayan structure) Castillo Real, El Caracol, Santa Rita, Ixpal Barco, Xhanan (all of them outstanding examples of Mayan architecture); Discover México (good for children); Palancar National Park (on the reef with the same name, perfect for water sports lovers)  Ecological Reserve South Point Park (fishing); Natural Chankanaab Park (natural wells and a great biodiversity of corals); San Juan, Chiquero, San Francisco (parachuting, kite board, windsurf, kayak); beaches; Punta Morena and Chiqueros (surf).

Good eco-friendly golf course, unique on the island (Cozumel Country Club). Arts and crafts made with antique techniques and with a clear reference to Mayan spirituality (textiles, hand-made embroidery, stone and wood carving, baskets, pottery, masks – a must have for those who appreciate this type of art-). Night atmosphere perfect for relaxed romantic outings. Signature cuisine is in fashion, fusing elements of the traditional gastronomy of Yucatán (base of the island’s typical food) with techniques and ingredients of other culinary traditions, mainly European.
